Crochet Queens Artist Statement -
Crochet Fashions by Alex.
Creating slow fashion with a tagline. Crochet Queens is a space that uniquely reflects my aesthetic and style whilst representing crochet in a space it may not have lived before. Lowfi/70s/pop art/grunge makes up majority of the vibe here.
The 70βs was a powerful time for women and not just in the flower child, give peace a chance movement. Women took up space amongst punks, rocken rollers, poets and scholars.
Crochet Queens is a reminder for women to take up space. TAKE IT ALL.
Girls To The Front was a term coined and popularized by 90βs punk band Bikini Kill front woman Kathleen Hanna. The Riot Grrl movement goes hand in hand with these four words.
I want Crochet Queens to be a space that recognizes these sentiments but owns them in an inclusive way. Itβs easy for us to exclude the masculine and focus on the feminine. But in order for women to Take Up Space we need to be inclusive and understand the masc/fem in all of us. Taking up Space is showing up as you are, wherever you are no matter. Take Up Space is a call for authenticity.
I make clothes for everyone. In these 70βs scenes women were embracing the masculine as well as feminine. Women were taking up space in masculine spaces and spreading the fem vibes. This goes both ways.
Yin and Yang
Together.
I guess this is a manifesto, a rambling of passion that goes with clothes.
This is more than crochet darlings, this is a statement of a movement.
